OAKLAND, Calif.—Redefining Progress announced today that Dr. Claude Martin, Director General of WWF-International, has joined the organization's Board of Directors.

"Dr. Martin's expertise on conservation and sustainability issues is an invaluable addition to Redefining Progress' efforts to work with international governments on measuring global resource use," said Redefining Progress Chair of the Board Rosemary Fei. "We will benefit from his insights on these critical issues, and to the broader governance and management of Redefining Progress."

"The addition of Dr. Martin to our board formalizes our present strategic partnership with WWF-International. In the next few years we will build on the success of the Living Planet Report to put sustainability on the global policy agenda. We look forward to benefiting from Dr. Martin's vast experience and continuing our coalition building to address the world's most pressing environmental problems," said Redefining Progress Executive Director Michel Gelobter.

"For a global conservation organization like WWF, identifying measures that allow a reliable and credible assessment of the state of the planet's natural ecosystems is vital," said Dr. Martin. "The work that Redefining Progress has contributed to WWF's research has allowed us to campaign more effectively for the changes needed to achieve a world in which humans can live in harmony with nature. I'm therefore pleased and honored to join the Board of this respectable organization."

Claude Martin was appointed Director General of WWF-International in October 1993. The Director General is the WWF-International's chief executive officer. WWF-International is one of the world's largest and most effective independent organizations dedicated to the conservation of nature, and operates in nearly 100 countries.

Prior to his current position, Martin served as WWF-International's Deputy Director General from 1990-1993. During this time, he oversaw the organization's field, policy, education, and communications programs. In this capacity, he led an organization-wide effort to focus WWF's worldwide programs by establishing global priorities and strategies.

Before joining WWF International, Claude Martin was Director and Chief Executive of WWF-Switzerland from 1980-1990. From 1975-1978, Claude Martin worked for the Wildlife Department of Ghana and served as Director of the Bia National Park and other tropical rainforest areas in the Western Region of Ghana.

A Swiss national, Martin holds an MSc in biology and a Ph.D. in wildlife biology from the University of Zurich.
